OUR STORY
Buck Of All Trades
Our grandfather, Harold Buck, was born in Union Bay in 1924, and moved to Nanaimo at a young age. Early in life he worked in the logging industry and owned his own logging truck. Later on he opened his own gas station, Fountain Service, and also worked for the Regional District of Nanaimo in the Public Works department. His dedication to his trade and to his community inspired us at a young age. Today we are licensed home builders, because our grandfather had believed in us and our skills to put us through trade school. We decided to name our business after him as a thank you and to honour his legacy.
MEET THE TEAM
The People Behind
The Projects
We’re not a revolving-door crew. Our team is made up of long-standing tradespeople, project managers, and support staff who care deeply about their work and your home.
At the helm is Buck himself: a builder with deep roots in the island, a passion for sustainable design, and a reputation for straight talk.

Jordan Robertson, RSE
Custom Home Builder, Journeyman Carpenter
Working With Your Hands
I am a custom home builder and Journeyman Carpenter from a fourth-generation Nanaimo family. My great-grandpa, Ole Buck, opened the first vocational school in Canada for fixing chainsaws. My grandpa, Harold Buck, owned a logging truck company that served Nanaimo and the surrounding area and later in life owned a Texaco garage and gas station in Downtown Nanaimo.
My father, Robert Robertson, was a great local athlete, still holding records at SFU. He was fourth in Canada to go to the Olympics in 1972. Later in life, he became a carpet layer and eventually worked at the mill.
As you can see, I come from a long line of men working with their hands and I take great pride in that. I intend to continue my family’s proud tradition of hard work and dedication for many years to come. My dad and I, from as far back as I can remember, worked together in the wood shop building or repairing whatever was needed around the house. With two young boys wrestling indoors, things often broke and we always had something to fix.
Home Building In Your Blood
I have always been interested in woodwork. I took Woodwork and Drafting in high school and then attended Vancouver Island University to take carpentry courses and become a journeyman carpenter. I knew before I left high school that I wanted to be a home builder in Nanaimo and I followed that path until it was achieved. Home building is a career I am proud to have chosen.
Custom Home Builder
The career path to becoming a custom home builder can come from many directions. I feel that working in the field and progressing from Apprentice to Journeyman to business owner and then to custom home builder is the right path. Building homes and understanding the craftsmanship that every individual brings can be missed if you have not spent time with tradespeople in the field. That experience gives you the ability to know when something looks right or wrong at a glance because you have seen it so many times before.
To become a Master Builder takes a lifetime of dedication to the craft, learning from peers, and learning from experience in the field. We still have a lifetime of learning ahead, but I can share with you that we take every opportunity to grow and improve our craft of custom home building.
High-Performance Homes
We have been excited about high-performance homes since we were first introduced to the concept. At first it was a bit confusing, as it is an entirely new way of looking at a home as a system. If you have any interest in learning more about high-performance homes, we will do our best to share what we know.
Design-Build Just Makes Sense
Before Design-Build became a common term in construction, I always wondered why people working on the same project were not brought together earlier in the design process to solve problems on paper first. It is one of those things where you say to yourself, “there has got to be a better way.” Today, it is a standard process for many home building companies, including Buck Robertson Contracting.
Integrated Project Delivery Method
The Integrated Project Delivery Method, in my mind, goes hand-in-hand with Design-Build. You create a team of like-minded professionals who collectively have the skills to solve whatever new problem is on the table. You are joined under an agreement to optimize the project’s results by relying on each other’s insights, expertise, and talents from the very beginning on paper.
With every new project in construction being a prototype, you are constantly solving problems. Having the best problem solvers at the table ensures a great design and construction experience.

Rhiannon Britten
Architectural CAD Technician and Residential Building
Designer
Loving Design
My love of design started early on. I grew up in a warm yet busy home and learned that regulating those busy environments by designing, decorating or tidying it to our needs was important in maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
Health And Comfort In Your Home Design
The homes we aim to design and build are high performing homes. Imagine your home as a system, like a body. While it is important to have healthy bones; it is also important to have healthy minds. Designing your home is an intricate and intimate process and it is important you feel comfortable communicating your needs to your builder and designer so you can grow or adapt comfortably in your home.
Travel And School Residential Building Designer
I spent my early twenties travelling around different countries, enjoying unique cultures while my passion for architecture and design grew. I then decided to hit the drafting board and completed my Bachelors in Interior design at Vancouver Island University. It was through my degree I discovered I leaned more into the technical side of design, enjoying drafting, building codes and model building projects over fit and finishing projects. I spent three years working in interior design, then found residential building design which I have adored and spent the last five years working in.
Realm Of Design
I continue to further my knowledge by studying architectural and building technology and learn a great deal everyday working with the support of my team at Buck Robertson Contracting. We take pride in our ability to communicate with you and our keen eye in the realm of design, where the only constant is change.
